Privacy Policy

Kin is a family app for recording pregnancy and the first three years of a child’s life. It is made by Norbert Bonnici (“we”). This policy explains what happens to the information you put into Kin.

The short version

  • We do not collect your data. Kin has no accounts, no servers of ours, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
  • What you log stays on your devices and in your own iCloud account. We cannot see it.
  • You can export all of it, or erase it, from inside the app at any time.

What Kin stores, and where

Everything you enter is stored on your device. This includes children’s profiles, feeds, sleep, nappies, growth, pregnancy readings, symptoms, medications, vaccinations, milestones, notes, photos and reminders.

If you are signed in to iCloud, Kin keeps a copy in your private iCloud database through Apple’s CloudKit service, so your devices stay in sync. This copy is stored by Apple under your Apple Account and is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy. We have no access to it.

Kin does not send your information anywhere else.

Sharing with family members

You can invite another person, such as a co-parent, to share one child’s records. Kin uses Apple’s iCloud sharing for this. The people you invite can then read and change that child’s records from their own Apple Account. You can stop sharing, and anyone you invited can leave, at any time from Baby › Family.

Kin keeps an activity log on each child that records which family member added, edited or removed an entry, so everyone can see who changed what. The log stays with the child’s records and is never sent to us.

Apple Health

Connecting Apple Health is optional, and you choose each type of data in Apple’s permission screen.

  • Pregnancy readings. If you allow it, Kin reads your weight, heart rate and blood pressure from Apple Health and adds them to your pregnancy log. Those readings are then stored like anything else you log in Kin, which includes your iCloud copy described above. If you allow it, Kin also saves readings you log in Kin to Apple Health, and updates or removes them there when you edit or delete them in Kin.
  • Your own sleep. If you allow it, Kin reads your sleep from Apple Health to show how your rest lines up with your baby’s usual naps. Your sleep data is only held in memory while the app is open. It is never stored by Kin, never synced to iCloud, never shared with family members and never put in summaries or reports.

Kin never uses Health data for advertising or marketing, and never shares it with third parties.

Other device features

  • Face ID or Touch ID. The optional App Lock uses Apple’s on-device authentication. Kin never sees your face or fingerprint data.
  • Widgets and Apple Watch. Kin passes a small summary, such as the time of the last feed, to its widgets and to your paired Apple Watch so they can show it. This stays on your devices. While App Lock is on, widgets hide it.
  • Notifications. Reminders are scheduled on your device. No notification content passes through our servers, because we have none.
  • Apple Intelligence. If you turn on enhanced phrasing, your weekly summary is rewritten by Apple’s on-device model. The text does not leave your device.
  • Ultrasound files and photos. Files you import are read on your device and stored with your records.

Children

Kin is used by parents and caregivers to keep records about their children. It is not directed at children, and children do not use it themselves. Information about a child is entered by their parent or caregiver, and stays under that person’s control as described above.

Exporting and deleting your data

From Baby › Export or delete you can:

  • Export a copy of everything Kin holds, as a portable JSON file with a readable summary.
  • Delete one child’s records, or delete all data. This removes it from your device and your iCloud, and from family members you have shared it with. Records that someone else shared with you stay with them.

Deleting the app removes the data on that device. The copy in your iCloud remains until you delete it in Kin or manage it in your device’s iCloud settings.

Because we never receive your data, we cannot export, correct or delete it for you. You have full control over it in the app.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, export and erase your personal data, including under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Kin is designed so that you can do all of this yourself, at any time, without asking us.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top and describe the change in the app’s release notes.
